Award winning writer and women’s right activist, Chimamanda Adichie received a honorary degree from the John Hopkins University yesterday 18th May, 2016.
She joined a number of distinguished Americans, including cinematographer, Spike Lee and Nobel Prize Winning Neuroscientist Richard Axel to be awarded at the institution’s 2016 commencement ceremony.
Commencement speaker for the ceremony, Spike Lee,called on the graduates to work towards unity.
He said, “Let’s build bridges of love versus walls of hate”, adding at the end of his speech, “black lives matter.”
The recipients of the honorary degrees each shared words on marble with the graduates via a video available on the University’s website, and Chimamanda’s words of wisdom called on the graduating seniors to seek knowledge.
She said, “Eat real food as often as you can and embrace ignorance. Say those words ‘I don’t know.’ Because by embracing ignorance we open up the possibility of knowledge.”
Ms. Adichie previously received a master’s degree in creative writing at Johns Hopkins University in 2003.
