Here’s How Mercy Ebosele’s Stature Was A Challenge To Her Acting Career

Nollywood actress cum movie producer Mercy Ebosele is one of the stars in the Yoruba film industry, where she is highly respected by both fans and colleagues.

In an interview with Punch, she opened up on her background and career.

Background

I am from Edo State but I was born in Oyo State where I also grew up. I am the sixth child and I have seven siblings. I had a very memorable childhood. Our home was filled with love and warmth and I’m grateful to God for that.

Education

I had my elementary education at Memorial Primary School before I proceeded to Oba Adeyemi Secondary School for my post-elementary education. Both schools are in Oyo Town. Thereafter, I went to the University of Ibadan where I studied Theatre Arts.
Acting

My journey to becoming an actress is an interesting one-I got involved in acting when I was in secondary school. I recall that I used to participate in stage dramas and got several accolades for doing so. As time went by, I realised that I had a flair for acting. When I gained admission to the University of Ibadan, everything fell into place and the rest like they say is history.

First time on set

Almost everyone gets nervous when they have to face the camera for the first time. My case wasn’t an exception and I am not shy to say that I had butterflies in my stomach. Notwithstanding, I overcame my anxiety by focusing on the task ahead. That way, I was able to do what I was on set to do.

Movies

Some of the earliest movies that I took part in include Alaanu mi, Anike, Apesin and a host of others. As a producer, I have churned out works such as Imisi, Esu, Tibi Tire, Ibusun and Soko Soko. I’ve actually lost count of the movies that I’ve featured in because they are too many. Many people wonder how I am able to speak Yoruba fluently as an Edo State indigene and I always tell them that I am a fluent speaker of the language because I grew up in the South-West. Because I speak Yoruba like any other person from Yorubaland, it helps me to get roles.

Parents

When I told my mum that I wanted to become an actress, she did not take it lightly. She had some misgivings about the profession but as time went on, she had no choice but to support me. Now, I have her blessings and she is one of my biggest fans and best critics.

 

Challenges

Like what obtains in other professions, acting also has its fair share of challenges. In the beginning, my stature was a challenge, but with the help of God, I was able to pull through.

Role models

Genevieve Nnaji is one of my role models. I admire her a lot. Her rise to stardom and acting prowess motivate me.

 

Awards

I have received a number of nominations and awards. I thank God for the honour because it shows that I am on the right track and people appreciate what I do. I am privileged to have numerous fans who appreciate the work that I do and haven’t shied away from telling me so. However, let me state that I handle them with the same amount of love and respect that they show me.

Current projects

I’m currently working on a new movie titled Ara (Thunder). My fans should be on the lookout for when it will be released.

Misconceptions

Ever since I began acting, I haven’t had any negative feedbacks about my career or person. I hope that it stays that way.

Fashion

I love to dress simple and nice. I’m not a loud person and I like to be modest in my appearance. For me, fashion means exploring one’s inner self through one’s choice of clothes at every point in time. That is my watchword.
