Nigerian celebrity novelist, Chimamandah Adichie’s book, ‘Americanah’ has been picked by New York’s resident as the winner of the ‘One New York One Book’ program – America’s Biggest Book Club.
According to PageSix; “Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s book “Americanah” is a novel all New Yorkers should read at once.
It tells the story of lovers Ifemelu and Obinze, who depart military-ruled Nigeria for the West, and it was just announced as the winner of the “One Book, One New York” contest in which locals voted for a tome they want the whole city to read together.
“I was very pleased to win, particularly because New York is America’s cultural beating heart, and my book was on a list of other really good books from writers I admire.” She said the novel from 2013, “feels newly topical to me.”
Chimamanda has also inspired a Dior fashion show, and her TED talk was sampled by Beyoncé on the song “Flawless.”
“Americanah” is being developed as a movie or TV series with Lupita Nyong’o.
Chimamanda said, “I am very excited that Lupita is going to play Ifemelu. She got the rights to the novel very early and she just connected to the story. It might possibly be a TV series . . . which I am very excited about because it is difficult to condense a book into a two-hour film.”
The “One Book, One New York,” campaign was spearheaded by Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment Commissioner Julie Menin.
