Last week Lagos state governor Akinwunmi Ambode disclosed that his government will roll out a free meal programme for pupils in the state’s schools. He said the kids will be getting one meal every school day, and he said the state government and federal government will split the cost.

Parents whose kids attend a state school have commented about the proposed program.
Funke has a daughter at the Saviours Primary School in Alagbado.
She tells Naij.com that: “I think the government’s plan is good and I hope they follow through with it. You know we have a proverb that when a poor person isn’t hungry anymore, then relief has come. A lot of parents whose child is in a public school can’t afford to give their child lunch money, so I think the government’s free meal program will be very helpful.”
But some parents think food isn’t really the priority.
One mom named Chioma says: “Food is not what our children need at this time. They need sound education. They need better teachers and textbooks, not free food. We can still feed our children, so what we want government to do is to improve the quality of education. Food will digest shortly, but sound education will benefit our children forever.”
During campaigns this year, the APC promised to launch a free meal program nationally in partnership with its state governments. Apart from this, the party also promised money for unemployed youths and poor people. Many people believe that Lagos’ plan to roll out this free meal programme is a step in that direction. But others are cynical.
Grace has a foster son in a state school. She says: “If you look at the education system, it’s very bad. Many of us who are parents today went to a public school, and the standard was top class. But how many people send their children to public school today?
“When my boy returns from school and I ask him to show me what they did today, he has nothing tangible to show me. The boy couldn’t even speak English fluently and was far behind his mates in private school, until I began to coach him personally and even him hired a private tutor. The government needs to pay more attention to primary education. That’s what the government should be doing.”
Meanwhile, the Lagos state government has asked residents of the state to cooperate with the contractors working on the new 114 new roads promised by the state governor, Ambode.
