The Alaafin of Oyo and members of the state Council of Obas have appealed to Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo state to pay their salaries which have not been paid for three months.

Western Post reports that the first class monarch, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III led other traditional rulers in the state to the governor’s office in Ibadan during the week. The Alaafin said the rulers understood the financial situation of the country but needed to be provided with firsthand information on how the state was being run.

“We were not invited for the budget presentation.  If the government proposes to spend N165 billion in 2016 and the state is not financially buoyant, we want to know how government intends to generate the needed income to finance the budget expenditure.

“For about three months, traditional rulers have not been getting funds from government. Though we recognize the current financial crisis in the nation, we are here to find out how the governor has been able to regularly pay the salaries and emoluments of members of the Council of Obas until the last three months.

“Government is about management of resources. It is about being caring. It is about being open to the people. We are grateful for the attention he gives traditional rulers. Some say the Alaafin usually does not support a governor for four years. It is because I am with the people. If a governor does not govern in the interest of the people, I switch to being on the part of the people.”

The monarch applauded the governor for running the state without excessive borrowing.

Governor Ajimobi in his response urged the traditional rulers to encourage their subjects to pay tax as the state was projecting generating N5billion internally. He said that way, here would be no problem paying the salaries of the traditional rulers.

“We have identified companies that have not paid tax for five years. Many house owners don’t pay tenement rate. So, traditional rulers have to help speak to their people on the need to pay tax.
