In the fight against drugs trafficking and corruption in correctional institutions Indonesian officials are going to extremes, they plan to built a prison guarded by crocodiles, tigers and piranhas.
The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) chief, Budi Waseso, has announced his controversial plans to construct a special prison island surrounded by deadly wild animals, explaining his decision by animals’ inability to take bribes.
He said: “You can’t bribe crocodiles. You can’t convince them to let inmates escape. It is also possible we may use piranhas, and because the number of personnel at the prison might not be enough, we can also use tigers. The number will depend on how big the area is, or whether perhaps to combine them with piranhas.”

Although the government rushed to say the announcement was just a joke, anti-drugs agency spokesman Slamet Pribadi confirmed the information about the prison designed for drug convicts who have been sentenced to death.
“This is serious, this is not a joke. Drug trafficking is an extraordinary crime and therefore the fight must also be extraordinary, we cannot fight the usual way,” the spokesman added.

Indonesia has some of the harshest anti-drugs laws in the world, including death by firing squad for traffickers. In April this year eight men, including several Nigerian nationals, one Brazilian and two Australian citizens were executed.
