The year is almost over, it is high time we revived in our memories all the things that took Nigeria to new heights in 2015, and the people who helped make Nigeria a better place.
Naij.com composed a list of 10 candidates who really broke the headlines this year and are worthy of winning the “Naij.com Internet Person of The Year” title. All of the candidates are undoubtedly great and successful people who have put their minds and skills into making Nigeria a better place.
Every Naij.com reader can choose their own ‘idol’ and cast their votes. The voting starts now and will end on December 31.
Let us remind you of the great deeds of these candidates.
President Muhammadu Buhari and former president Goodluck Jonathan have both contributed to the democratic presidential elections that ended with minimum protest demonstrations and bloodshed.
The former INEC boss Attahiru Jega also can be added to the list of people who made the election as peaceful and as organized as possible.
The author of Americanah and Half of a Yellow Sun, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, is a talented and inspiring woman whose books are read all over the world. Recently, the Baileys Prize-winning Nigerian author delivered a speech a TEDx talk on feminism.
Wole Soyinka and Olusegun Obasanjo remain two pillars of wisdom for Nigerians. Both of them are actively taking part in educating their fellow Nigerians. Obasanjo, for instance, had established the Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation to combat non-communicable and water-borne diseases in Nigeria and in Africa.
A former Nigerian army colonel, Sambo Dasuki, warned the military was not able to guarantee safety to civilians due to increase Boko Haram attacks in the run-up to presidential election, which was subsequently postponed till March in a controversial move by Jonathan.
In recent months, several high-profile government officials have been accused of wrongdoing and subsequently fired in the ongoing anti-corruption fight promoted by Buhari. Some have argued, however, that recent allegations against Dasuki might be part of a vendetta by Buhari for the 1985 coup that resulted in his overthrow.
Former Nigerian pretroleum minister Diezani Alison-Madueke, who was arrested in London in October on suspicion of bribery and money laundering, has allegedly gone to the UK to seek treatment for breast cancer. After she was released on bail, Alison-Madueke decided to go home and visit a Lagos-based controversial preacher, TB Joshua.
The spiritual leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, a group propagating the Shi’ite ideology in Nigeria, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, is currently in police custody, being guarded as he received treatment at an undisclosed medical facility. He was detained after deadly clashes between Nigerian soldiers and his followers in the city of Zaria, Kaduna state, in northern Nigeria.
The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra and director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, was recently accused of having intention to levy war against Nigeria in order to proclaim southsouth geo-political zone, the Igala community of Kogi state and the Idoma/Igede community of Benue state into a Republic of Biafra.
